Answering the Questions of "Can" in Christianity II
In the first part of this message, we answered the question, "Can the Christian commit sin?" In this second part, we're going to answer the question, "Can the Christian get sick?" You'll enjoy today's message as you did the first part.
As it was with the first part, the emphasis is on "can", meaning "able to". Therefore is the Christian able to get sick or not able to get sick?
To answer this question correctly, let's first tackle the question, "Who is the Christian?"
Some say the Christian is the spirit man living in a vile body. Others say the Christian is the glorified man living in an unglorified body. Still others say the Christian is the savedman undergoing constant transformation in a vile body. Mind you, the Bible does not clearly define the Christian, so all of these definitions stem from the way people conceive the Christian.
Those who hold to this kind of definition of the Christian perceive the spirit man as one entity and his or her body as another entity. Both entities have conflicting interests, therefore there's a constant battle for supremacy between them. The entity which proves stronger in a given spiritual or moral battle comes out victorious.
I believe and confess that the Christian is a spiritual being who carries himself or herself about in a vessel called the body. The Christian carries himself or herself about in a body. However, the body is not divisible from the spirit as though they were siamese twins who can eventually be separated from each other.
Paul taught, "The life I now live in the body, I [the spirit man] live [in or through the body] by faith in the Son of God..."
Don't misquote or misunderstand Paul. He didn't say or intend to say that he lived apart from his body, but rather, through his body. This means that he disposed his spiritual nature through his body. In other words, he dealt out his new life by means of his body. And he was able to live the life of God in the body by faith - faith in the Son of God.
To state it more clearly, how you saw Paul conduct himself in the body was how he [the spirit man] conducted himself as a result of his faith in the Son of God. Faith is the dispensing of Christ through the body.
Clearly, we see a man who trained his body to behave according to the state of his spiritual mind or according to the condition of his regenerated spirit.
So, when you do wrong, do not say, "I didn't do any wrong. It's my body that acted wrongly." This means that you misunderstand your conformation to Christ. Christ was not a separate entity from Jesus as is being taught in some circles.
Stemming from the misconception of the spirit and the body as two separate (divisible) entities who are in constant conflict, some Christians say that they do not get sick. That the body may catch an illness but they themselves [the spirit inside the body] cannot catch an illness.
Is this a declaration of faith? No, it is sheer misconception of the truth. The voice of truth says, "Let the weak say, I am strong' ". Who is God calling weak? Obviously, the person who feels weak. To declare, "I am strong" and to behave strongly when you feel weak, is faith. But to deny that you feel weak, is a misconception of the truth. It implies that you see yourself as one entity, and your body as another entity who is in constant conflict with you.
Christianity is not denying your humanity but subduing it by the power of the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ as Paul did according to Galatians 2:20.
The Christian and sickness
Can the Christian get sick? Yes, they can, if they don't apply the wisdom that is in them to observe a healthy habit, for instance, drinking much water or taking a nap when you feel tired bodily, just to mention a few.
Eternal Life and Divine Healing
Because of the assurance of eternal life, you are able to override the consciousness of an illness in your body. This does not mean that you can never get sick, but that, when you catch an illness, you can command life to ooze from within you to revitalize your body as a result of your faith in the Son of God. Since you have activated your faith for divine healing by declaring it, begin to act strongly as evidence that you are healed. It takes faith to enjoy divine healing.
