Perfect Means Completely Good

PERFECT MEANS COMPLETELY GOOD

Today's message is based on the story of the rich young ruler found in Matthew 19:16-22. You may pick up your Bible to refresh your mind with the story before you get into today's message.

This story has, for a long time, been thrown out of balance. The rich young ruler actually loved Jesus and greatly admired him. Addressing Jesus as "Good Master" (KJV) tells it all. He had observed Jesus and come to conclusion that Jesus was completely good, so he turned to him to learn more about what further good thing he could do to be completely good to get eternal life. Mind you, he had obeyed the ten commandments since his youth, and he was not bragging. In fact, Mark's account of this event adds that Jesus looked at him and loved him (10:21), implying that what he said was not untrue, for Jesus would not love a liar and a braggart.

One thing to note here is that Jesus took advantage of the man's own words to reveal a profound secret about himself. The man addresses him, "Good Master". Jesus responds,  "Why do you call me good? There is only One who is good, that is, God." Have you thought about Jesus' statement deeply? If there is only One who is good, and you call me 'Good Master', then you must be asserting that I am God. Jesus did not say this to indicate that he was a mere human being, hence not worthy to be called Good, but rather, he said this to affirm that he was God in human form, hence worthy to be called Good.

The rich young ruler wants to find out from Jesus, "Apart from obeying the ten commandments, what other good thing must I do to be completely good to get eternal life?" This implies that even while obeying the ten commandments [and Jesus was happy with him that he did], the rich young ruler felt that he was not completely good and needed to do more good things so as to be complete. To this Jesus responded, "If you want to be perfect [here, perfect means completely good], go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

The rich young ruler went away sad upon hearing that to be completely good to get eternal life, he had to sell all his possessions to give to the poor, then come back to follow Jesus. What's the point here? You cannot be completely good through your deeds.

This message is to those who feel that it takes doing good deeds to merit eternal life or to qualify for heaven. Actually there's no end to doing good, and certainly, there's nothing you can do to be completely good to merit eternal life or to qualify for heaven.

What must you do to be completely good to get eternal life or to qualify for heaven?

Obeying the ten commandments will not merit you eternal life. Obeying the Sharia will not merit you eternal life. Following Hanukkah, or Sunnah, or Karma will not merit you eternal life. Selling all your properties to give to the poor will not merit you eternal life or qualify you for heaven. Only one thing gives you eternal life and qualifies you for heaven. That is, Jesus Christ and faith in him!

To enjoy eternal life, you must humbly accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, not as a prophet. Believe with all your heart that he died on the cross as ransom for your sins, and was raised back to life for the sake of your righteousness. Then receive the Holy Spirit into your heart to make your salvation complete.

The moment you receive the Holy Spirit, your salvation is complete, sealed and embossed by God. You only have to study to grow up in your trust for Jesus and in your awareness of, and fellowship with your true and heavenly Father.

Peace and glory to you as you come to Christ today! For follow up on your newfound faith, you may email us at sagepublication.1306@gmail.com.

Enjoy long life, wealth and honour through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen!
